Google-It
Site Promotion Tips for the Small Business
November 2, 2007
Google is the world’s most popular search engine. If you do well in Google’s search results, you’ve got it made.
The way that Google ranks web sites is complicated, but there are people out there who have figured out most of it. What they can tell you is what you need to do to get your web site higher in the Google rankings.
Here are some examples of things to do:
- Make sure your site has a clear, efficient structure and that each and every page on your site can be navigated to by a text link.
- Add a site map to your site and make search it can be easily understood. The links should point to all parts of your site.
- Add the specific words users would use to access your pages to the page content. If the page is about widgets, make sure the word widget is somewhere on the page.
- Keep the number of links on any particular page to less than 100.
- (most important) Actually submit your site to Google. You can do that here: http://www.google.com/addurl.html
- Place a robot.txt file in the main folder of your site. You can find out more about this at: http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/norobots.html
- Keep your site up-to-date. Make changes on a regular basis.
In addition, here are some examples of things not to do:
- Do not link to spammer sites.
- Do not fall for site promotion schemes.
- Do not create multiple sites with duplicate content.
