Submit your site or blog to a directory and gain massive exposure. A directory is a service that provides links to web sites in a categorized manner. There are approximately 7500 volunteers around the world that edit the content on the directory service, sometimes called DMOZ or ODP. Many sites use directories to provide content for their sites. Changes to the directory are not shown immediately on all of the subscribing sites; it could take several months. “Being linked [to] from the ODP will usually boost your ranking in Google and
thus provide your site with lots of highly targeted traffic, much more
than what you will get through the directory itself.”

In order to submit your site to the directory, go to http://www.dmoz.org/add.html and follow the instructions provided. Make sure you obey all of the rules listed so you will have a better chance of getting and keeping your site in the directory. Just submitting your site does not mean that your site will actually be accepted, however.

If your site is not accepted, you do have other recourse. Apply to become an editor for the directory. Instructions on this are listed here. It's unpaid work, but you get to review new sites, which can be interesting work. If you are approved as an editor, you can add your own site.

Sites can be listed in the directory more than once, so once you make it in, your work is not over. Find additional categories that apply to your site's subject and submit to them.
