Alexa Toolbar and Alexa Rank

Web Site Promotion For The Small Business v2
December 7, 2007

Sorry for not blogging for a while. I’ve been extremely busy promoting the www.johnasimpson.com web site and taking care of my kiddos. I think I’m back on track now.

What is Alexa?
Alexa is a traffic statistics web site. They make traffic information available for other web sites.

What is Alexa Rank?
Here is the Alexa-provided explanation:

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.

The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users)

How does Alexa apply to you?
People typically use Alexa to see how their web site stacks up against other web sites on the Internet. The primary users of Alexa are advertisers and web site managers.

How can the Alexa Toolbar affect my Alexa Rank?
The Alexa Toolbar is a direct participant in the Alexa Rank. Actually, the only participants in Alexa Rankings are the users of the toolbar. Use the toolbar and by visiting your site, you are increasing your Alexa Rank.

In what other ways can the Alexa Toolbar assist me in promoting my site?
There are actually several well-documented ways to increase your rank in Alexa and even utility sites out there to assist in this effort. Here are several of the sites that describe these methods:
