Keyword Density

Web Site Promotion For The Small Business v2
December 9, 2007

QuartersThe whole point of Search Engine Optimization is to make it easy for Internet users to find your web site. Search engines operate based on keywords. Keyword density of a web site is the number of times a word appears on a web site vs. the number of words on that web site (i.e., if my site has 10 words and 2 of those words are my search key, the keyword density is 20%). Per the RFS article published on December 7, 2007 entitled Importance of Keyword Density, “Improving the keyword density on your site is one of the fastest and simplest ways to increase your site’s visibility in the search engine results pages.” This tool from the Google Rankings website allows you to determine the most-frequently used words on a particular web site. These are the words that should be used in the META keyword TAG and that should also be used when submitting sites to catalogs and search engines. Although it has been thought for a long time that META keyword TAGs are important, some say that the use of META keyword TAGs is dead. In an October 1, 2002 article, Danny Sullivan, formerly of SearchEngineWatch.com, wrote “the value of adding meta keywords tags to pages seems little worth the time. In my opinion, the meta keywords tag is dead, dead, dead.” Common belief, however, is that “some search engines still look at metatags, but increasingly they put much more emphasis on both visible text on the page and “off-page factors” (popularity, linking structure of the Internet, etc.) to measure page relevance.” (Andrew Goodman, 9/2/2002, Traffick.com)

PenniesMy thought is that the task is so simple that if it is possible that the exercise may help increase the web site rank on even a few web sites, every little bit helps. Don’t get me wrong. I equate this exercise to finding a few quarters on the ground, with the effort being picking them up. If it were pennies, that would be a different story.

Here are some links for you, in case you want to pick up those quarters:
