I decided to treat yesterday like an experiment, in that, I didn’t worry about spending money (while being practical, of course). Basically, it was an experiment in the Internet Lifestyle experience. I definitely liked what I was experiencing. No money or time worries, however, there was one thing on my mind the entire day; this blog post. I won’t spend too much time on this, but I have been experiencing instances of 444 in my life. I had another one this morning. I was up until about 6:30, getting a few things done. Yes…I did get some sleep before going to Six Flags.

The girls woke me up around 9:00am. We didn’t actually get out of the house until noon or so. It was time for lunch!!! Of course, we had to stop at my favorite “get some food quick and I don’t care what it costs or how good it is for me” place…McDonald’s. Yummm!!! At least that’s what I think. I can never tell what the girls are thinking about the food I get them.

So I haven’t shaved. It’s all art of my experiment, of course… I did shower so don’t even think about leaving any comments about endangerment of children charges.

We made it out to the park. I decided to take a picture of us with the park in the background. Once I took a look at the pic, I realized that the girls didn’t really do anything to their hair before we left the house. We decided to go to the water park first. I promise, I did NOT do that to cover up the fact that both girls had messy hair.

Here I am, BACK at the car because I forgot the tickets. Cassie won a ticket from school for doing a bunch of reading. The ticket and a $24.99 coupon from the Girl Scout Council of Eastern Missouri were both left behind. No way I’m EVER paying full price to get into this place after working here for 13 seasons (ride operator / computer programmer). Anyway, my Spending Less 101 readers would be proud of me.

On the way across the parking lot towards the front gate, we came across some guys loading some sort of futuristic vehicle onto a trailer. I’ve never seen it before, but some other people there said it was from a movie. If you can tell me what movie this car was in, please let me a comment.

We made it into the park. There were a lot of people there. Of course, something had to happen as soon as we got in. Out of the blue, this gigantic rabbit attacked the kids.

I decided to take a picture because I didn’t think anyone would believe me.

I had never been to the water park so we decided to go check it out. I thought you had to pay more to get into the water park, but evidently not. We just walked right in.

It was pretty nice. A wave pool, 8 water slides, by my count, and a lazy river is what I saw. Thee was also a place for the kids to play in the water. It was under a giant bucket.

By the way, one of my new ventures is free stock photos. I create all of the content myself. Here is one photo I took at the water park. Use it all you like. Just make sure people know you got it from johnasimpson.com.

From where we were in the water park, you could see the lift of the Batman ride. This one happens to be Cassie’s favorite ride. Alex has not ridden it because she is not tall enough yet.

The first thing they wanted to do in the water park was something called the Tornado. Pictured below, it looked pretty scary, so I was surprised that Alex wanted to do it. After riding it, I now understand WHY you are told to hold onto the handles of the inner tube. If you let go, you will be launched off the tube.

By the way, I switched from embedding the pics with the text to this format because it’s easier. I am NOT going back and fixing the previous paragraphs.

Next, the girls wanted to ride the big water slide (green one). After riding the tornado, I’d had enough of water for a little while. I wanted to get warmed up more so I let them go. Again, I was surprised that Alex wanted to do this.

Cassie said the green slide scratched her back. They both rode the red slide next. Alex hit her head when she tried to sit up inside the tube. She had a headache for a short period of time.

Next, we decided to get lunch. To make this long story short, there was so much confusion at the concession stand that we ended up not paying for our food. Too bad I had not gotten any for myself.

Alex had pizza and in addition to that, she was eating Cassie’s waffle fries. Cassie had a footlong hotdog with catsup and relish. She ate the whole thing.

On our way out of the water park, Alex decided to stop to get a picture next to a shark. Notice anything? Evidently, I didn’t, or I would have said something to her before I took the picture. Sorry Alex.

Of course, the first thing Cassie and I wanted, when we went into the regular park was…Funnel Cakes..

Sorry, I didn’t get a before pic, but it was a funnel cake, topped with ice cream and hot fudge. This is was Cassie had for desert and what I had for lunch. Alex ended up getting cotton candy.

Scooby Doo just had to get in on abducting my daughters. I stopped him, but just before I allowed him to leave, I made him take a picture with the girls. Alex kept hugging him, until I decided we should leave. You never know what kind of individual is in that suit.

I guess Superman drives a truck now. At least he parks in the Superman section of the parking lot. I took this pic on the way to take the swimming stuff back to the car.

We finally made it to the new ride. The Evel Knievel Coaster was the smoothest ride of any wooden coaster I have ever been on. It was like riding waves. It is now my favorite coaster, and as a previous employee of Six Flags, groups of us would go to parks around the country, riding coasters. I tried to get video of this, but there was no strap on my digital camera, so I didn’t want to take the chance of loosing it.

I want to get on to the videos so I am going to continue forward with just showing some pictures (see all of the pics in the Flickr Slideshow below). Consider this to me a montage representation of a great portion of our day.

I also shot several video clips from the days adventure. The first one is of me interviewing Alex about the water slide she went on.

This video is of the girls playing in the water. I could not figure out how to put all of the videos in on YouTube player quickly. I will eventually.

Here, we are going up the lift on the Screamin’ Eagle. I was not brave enough to hold the camera through the ride because my camera did not have a strap. It does now.

Finally, we have the fireworks pics. We found a spot in Batman Plaza to watch. They only went on for 10 minutes, but you would have thought it was hours because the girls were very restless by this point.

I’m not going to post my fireworks video. It only lasts about 2 seconds before the battery went out on the camera. Stupid me. I didn’t bring extra batteries.

We were on our way to the gate, when Cassie brought up the fact that I said something about getting ice cream on the way out of the gate. It’s a tradition. I said we missed it because of the fireworks, but when I saw an opening in the crowd, I made a turn and we went to get our ice cream. Although the park was closed, this stand was still open, by design, I’m sure. We got our ice cream and headed out.

The end of the night. What an AWESOME day.

So you are probably wondering about the results of my experiment. Let me tell you this. What people are calling “The Internet Lifestyle” is just having control of your life and being able to live it the way you want to without being beholden to a job. As I went through the day, I paid for things with my bank card and with cash. For the most part, I didn’t even think about how much. My only problem was that I didn’t have enough in cash form. Actually, that was probably a positive. If you can only spend cash, you can see it dwindling. This is not to say that I want to be able to spend a bunch of money. I am saying that I don’t want to have to worry about money. I am 41 and I have been working about money for 25 or so of those 41 years. I’ve had enough. Yes, it does take a while to get a site going, but I believe it’s just a startup thing. I think that once it catches, it will take off…like a virus, hence the term Viral.

This is a comprehensive and detailed list of site promotion tasks:

• Load the Alexa Toolbar into Firefox and visit your site using Firefox: Alexa rankings are driven by the users of the toolbar visiting web sites. As you visit your site periodically, your ranking will go up. That goes for anyone else visiting your site so it might even make sense for you to write a post encouraging your readers to use the Alexa toolbar.

• Comment on related blogs: This will give you an immediate incoming link, which is what you want. Leaving comments of substance on other people’s blogs is one of the primary ways of getting incoming links. You may want to set up a schedule for this one. Without a schedule, I’ll get caught up reading other people’s sites and I will end up not finishing my comments. 3 times a week (maybe Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) might work. I put things like this on Outlook’s calendar. You might be able to use Google Calendar.

• When creating posts, refer to other blogs (blog posts), and use the trackback link from that blog for the link to that blog. A lot of times, when you are reading a post, at the bottom of that post, there is a link with the text “trackback”. Right-click on that, and click “copy link location”. This is what you want to use when pointing to that blog. This will guarantee that their system will know you are pointing to them. Doing this also creates a link on their site indicating that you are pointing to them.

• Read, read, read: This one is not directly related to site promotion, but reading will give you other ideas. I suggest reading the RSS feeds of some SEO pros out there, such as www.cshel.com, www.mattcutts.com (although this gets a lot technical), www.seomoz.org, etc. Do a Google search for SEO export blog and subscribe to their RSS feeds using Google Reader. Google Reader is awesome for keeping track of RSS feeds. You can also listen to the podcasts of the big SEO and Internet Marketing people.

• Generate your own content as frequently and consistently as possible. If you are blogging in advance, you can set the publish date on the post in the future and it won’t show up on your blog until that day. I am currently 12 days ahead in posting on Spending Less 101.

• Save future ideas as draft posts: If you have blog ideas, but have not developed them into posts, put the title and any notes you have in WordPress and click “save” instead of “publish”. This will create a draft. Now the idea is in a safe place where you can expand on it or finish it anytime you want and it won’t be lost or forgotten.

• Set up automated social bookmarking on WordPress: I have only been able to find plug-ins to post to 3 of the many social bookmarking sites automatically. I have them on my blog and they post to delicious, Simpy, and Twitter. I continue to look for this.

• Submit your posts to social bookmarking sites: A good way to do this is to use SocialPoster.com or SocialMarker.com. I am playing with the idea of purchasing Auto Social Poster. This will do all of that automatically.

• Monetize Your Blog: Place ad zones on your site. You can do this using OpenAds or similar products.

• Use EntreCard: You know this one. Drop, drop, drop… 300 per day, per site. They use the credits to buy ads on other sites. This will get you links on other related sites…even if it is temporary. You can even use the credits to get people to comment on your blog through the EntreCard Shop.

• Use various forms of media on your blog. You need video. You can find something on YouTube and embed the code.

• Submit your RSS feed to feed directories: Do a Google search on RSS feed directory and submit your RSS feed to as many as you can stand to.

• Submit your blog to blog directories: Do a Google search on blog directories and submit your site to as many of those as possible.

• Write Articles: If you can write an article on a subject that is also related to your blog, do that. The article should be at least 2000 words. Don’t post this to your blog. If you do and others also post it, it will get flagged as duplicate content. Do a Google search for article directories and post to as many of those as you can stand. You will include with your article, a resource box at the bottom, which contains a little information about you and a link to your blog. When people use your content on their site, they have to include the resource box, which will link bank to your site. Check out my articles on EzineArticles.

• Enlist the help of others: This includes all of your friends. You can ask them to do things like:
  • Adding the Alexa toolbar to IE or Firefox (there is one for IE now).
  • Having them comment on posts that relate to them.
  • Promote your site by adding a link to their Facebook, MySpace, or other social networking account.
  • Subscribe to your RSS feed
  • Link to your site from their site(s), if they have a site
• Install a plug-in on your blog that will link to other posts within your blog: This is basically the “If you liked this post, take a look at these” post. There is a plug-in like that, but it only does it in random posts. I found another one that does it in all posts. I can show you the results and how to install it.

• Use Social Networking heavily: The reason all of my networks are large is because I see the value in networking with as many people as possible. You should get as many people in your Facebook, LinkedIn, Stumble, etc., networks as possible.

• Work less on the design and more on the content.

• Submit your site to DMOZ.org: This is big because this directory is used on tons of web sites.

• Create A Site t-shirt: Make a t-shirt with your site name on it and wear it often. There are several places you can get this done, including http://www.customink.com/services/cheap-t-shirt-printing.htm.

Once your site starts to go Viral, you won’t have to do as much promotion, but you will need to have consistent content.

Twitter has become the rage. People tend to use Twitter to tell the world what they are doing at all times of day and night. I admit that I’ve gotten caught up in it also. I use Twitter through the FireFox plugin, TwitterFox. Twitter can be used for SEO. There are a few WordPress plugins that automagically submit links to your new posts on Twitter. A few of them are:

• OnlyWire Service + OnlyWire WordPress Plugin (free)
• Auto Tweet
• Twitter Tools

Even without automatically posting to Twitter, you can still keep your friends (and/or followers) informed as to when you make changes on your site and when you post new content. If your friends are using TwitterFox or one of the other Twitter-based interactive plug-ins, they will immediately know when you have new or updated content. Also, those viewing the everyone timeline in Twitter will see your update. More potential visitors to your site.

All of the blog experts say that if you include a photo in your blog post, it will make it more attractive and users are more likely to read it. Now, you could go out and take all of the pictures you need, but unless you are a professional photographer, or you have an $800 digital camera (or both), you may or may not get good shots. Also, this takes up a lot of time. Another way to get the photos is to steal them from other web sites. In most cases, you’d probably get away with it, however, when that one web site owner notices their pics on your site (at the end of a really bad day), you could find yourself on the business end of a lawsuit for copyright infringement. I’m sure you don’t want that. The quickest legal way to acquire photos is to get them from a free stock photo site. There are many of them on the internet. Donna Fontenot of DazzlinDonna.com listed 10 of them in her blog post entitled, Favorite 10 Free Stock Photo Download Sites. Check it out.

1. Write your blog posts as if they were articles, then post them to article directories: This can drive a lot of traffic and can also get your work out to the public because your articles will be used as content on multiple blogs…all linking back to you.
2. Social bookmark your posts. SocialPoster.com is the best tool for doing this that I’ve come across.
3. List your blog in blog and site directories.
4. Add your blog to DMOZ.org, which is syndicated on quite a lot of sites.
5. Comment on other people’s blogs.
6. Join social networks, like Facebook, Friendster, MySpace, etc… #2 will drive this one because, most of the time, you have to be a member in order to post links on these sites.
7. Set up your RSS feed in FeedBurner.
8. Answer questions on Yahoo and LinkedIn. This will help establish you as an expert in the field of your choosing.
9. Add a link to your site in your email signature.
10. Write as much content as you can without forming blisters on your fingers. The more content you write, the more often the bots visit.

• Create a custom error page for 404 errors and put links on that page. I have not done this yet, but it makes sense…and I’ve seen it elsewhere. Even in error, your users get something useful.
• Group your best posts of the week or month together and post a summary at the end of that time period. You might even do one for the end of the year.
• Including links in the footer is also another great way to connect the various pieces of your site. I’ll have to do that one too.
• Start a series of posts (part 1, part 2, etc.). Link them together, and don’t forget to post ALL of the parts.
• Create an FAQ for your site.

I have taken two of my blog posts and converted them to article.

Here are some of the things to modify:

1. Make a copy of the HTML version of the post and remove all links.
2. Add a {resource box} to the bottom of the post that includes some information about you and a linke to your web site. Generating in-bound links is one of the main reasons for submitting articles to article directories…unless you get your joy from the writing alone. I like writing, but a little more money would be nice too.
3. Make sure the post does not sound like a promo ad for your blog.

- www.easyarticles.com

This is really easy and you get a lot of bang for the buck. Oh, and don’t worry if your article is rejected the first time, or second time, or third time… The {article publisher} wants to maintain the integrity of their site. Can you blame them for that? Keep correcting and submitting until the draft is accepted.

Also, don’t stop at one article publisher. Submit your article to as many publishers as you can. Here are some more:

If you are a blogger you write a lot of content. This content is the life blood of your blog's traffic. Your posts are the main element that brings visitors in and turns visitors into readers.

Since you write all of those posts In the natural process of blogging, it would be marvelous to find ways to reuse it to get even more use from it.

That's where free reports come into play. By offering free reports on the ideas your blog covers you can allow the report to be distributed from other web sites and lead those who read it back to your blog.

The best part with this method is that you already have written all of the content you could ever need to write free short reports. You won't have to actually create a bunch of new posts to make your short reports, you can just use past blog posts.

You just need to select three to seven past posts from your blog on a single subject and combine them into a new short report. Use a pdf maker tool to compile the articles into a complete short report and make it available for readers to download. Be sure to add something that informs people that they can make your report available from their blog to let others download it too.

Now when other bloggers read this report some of them will decide they want to put your report on their site for their readers to download. This will advertise your blog to many visitors who might not have known about your blog otherwise. And some of these people will choose to link to your free short reports from their sites too, which will promote your blog even more in an ever widening circle of targeted readers.

FREE. What a wonderful word. Whenever I hear the word FREE, I am there before the person closes their mouth. This tip is good for anyone in small business, whether or not you have a web site. It also marks the expanded focus of this blog, which is now web site promotion for $0 and other free stuff for small business. On to today's tip…

Vista Print has been offering the 250 free business cards for a long time. Over the years, I've taken advantage of the deal a total of 5 times now (I'm not sure if there is a limit). Get your free business cards now (just pay for shipping). As I said in my October 21, 2007 post, make sure you put your web URL on it..and don't forget the WWW (it's a cleaner look). Site addresses without it always look like they are missing something.

This is a FREE classified ad site and a great place to post links to your site. One of the biggest things that search engine ratings are based on is how many sites have links to your site. Craigslist provides a FREE place for you to post links to your site. Their Small Business Ads section is a must, but there are other sections that may apply, depending on your business.

Dennis Watson posted similar information in his blog…and he agrees with this position. There are others that say, don’t bother with free classified ad sites because they will not deliver the targeted audience.
