I didn’t think of this one. Someone else did. I’m talking about using Social Spark, which I thought was specifically for paid blogging, etc., to promote one’s blog…without having to pay anyone.

I logged onto socialspark.com and after adding all of my blogs, I started looking through the offers. Since my blogs are not approved, I can only accept the offers that do not involve money. I figured it would be a good exercise, so I settled on one to try. It actually was not related to posting. It was a request for an RSS subscribe exchange. I did it. I’ll have to see if the other part reciprocates. I found another offer, which involved writing a post about a site, then leaving a comment on that site. The payment is supposed to be the addition of my blog to his blogroll. The site is a PR3. The problem is, it won’t help me if I cannot somehow tie that site’s subject to the subject of my blog. It just so happens that it is related. In fact, you can check out http://lepixelshoppe.com/scrap4dollars yourself. I will also be adding this blog to my blogroll.

Before I get to the meat of this post, let me tell you now that you will NOT be able to actually grab microsoft.com’s traffic for yourself. I used that title as an example of what this post is about, which is using expired domains to drive traffic to your site. Besides, Billy G. would never let microsoft.com expire.

There are a ton of articles out there that profess the benefits of purchasing expired domain in order to utilize the traffic remaining on those domains. In How To Snatch An Expiring Domain, Mike Davidson tells all about his first experience with an expired domain. He indicated that he purchased the domain for $18.95 and in two and a half months, made $369. Another article, posted by Mike Santiago on MakeMoneyOnTheInternet.com, talks a lot about not only the existing traffic, but about building the domain up so it can eventually be sold for a higher price. Although a lot of the articles out there talk about making money on the site through parking, you can also 301 redirect that traffic to your site, as long as the subject is related.

Grabbing this traffic is like picking up the money someone has left on the table. I am doing this (just started so I have not made any money yet). Give it a try.

If you are thinking about hiring an SEO expert to increase the visibility of your site, how will you know if what the person is going to do for you is worth the expense? If one SEO charges $40/hour and another one charges $80/hour, does the more expensive SEO do more for your web site? Hiring an SEO expert to increase your site’s visibility is a big decision. Plenty of research needs to be done before you make the decision. If you do decide to hire a professional, you will need to figure out the SEO ROI & Conversion Rate, meaning weigh the cost against the benefit (or at least the promised benefit). That will determine whether or not the investment is worth it. There are formulas for this type of decision-making. Find out more detail by clicking the link above, and be careful. There are a lot of scammers out there that are just waiting to take your money and run.

So far, the ads are paying for the hosting space and the domains, so I’ve broken even. WooHoo!!! Now for the new goal.

My goal is to make $10/day by the end of March

I’m sure I can do it. I have been promoting the blog on a daily basis. This goal is not limited to this blog. I plan on purchasing some more domains and parking them. I also plan on adding more affiliate accounts. I think I currently have 5 or 6. John Chow said he had 170 affiliate accounts at one point. If that is what it takes, I’m on it.

Here are the affiliates I am currently using:

I’m on my way and I’m not alone. My friend Adam is also going along for the ride. Should be fun, if nothing else.

Do your have paid ads running on your web site or blog? If so, your site is “monetized“. I was working on the Hazelwood75.com web site the other day and it hit me like a ton of bricks. We need to be using target=”_blank” whenever we place links on our site that take the user away from our site. The primary reason is that it keeps the original browser window containing our site open, which means the user has not left and there is a better chance that the user will pick up where they left off before they clicked on the link and they will keep surfing our site. The other reason is, if you have an ad engine that automatically switches the ads after a certain amount of time, and you get paid for each ad impression (each time the ad is displayed on the site), your ad impression rate will continue to climb, regardless of whether or not the user is actually looking at that particular browser window. It’s a small tweak with potentially large returns. The point is to keep the user on your site as long as possible…

It's pretty safe to say that anyone who has a computer has at some
point or another used a search engine. Search engines are extremely
useful creatures. They have had a major impact on our society, I mean
its pretty amazing that you can just go type in anything you want into
a search box and get back information about it in about two seconds.
Before search engines came along you pretty much had to rely on going
to the library to get more information. With that being said the
popularity of search has created quite a huge market. The advent of
paid advertising has sprung search engines into a multi-billion dollar
a year industry, thus creating some pretty stiff competition. Right now
we are in the midst of a major war on the internet, with the major
players being Yahoo, MSN, Google, and an upcoming strong contender in
Ask. So you may ask who is winning this war right now? And why? And who
will take the lead in the future? One thing is for sure the reward of
being the king of the search mountain will reap billions and billions
of dollars annually.

So what are these top gun search engines competing over? The answer is
clicks, on the paid advertisements they present every time someone uses
their search engine. If you notice when you use Google for example that
at the very top of the page and on the right hand side it says
sponsored sites. This is where people trying to make money online pay
to advertise for their company. These prices range from nickels and
dimes per click, all the way up to hundreds of dollars per click,
depending on the keyword. So the main objective for a search engine is
to get as many people as possible using them to search the internet.
Just think about it for a second, the more searches they get, the more
chance of people clicking on their paid ads, which is where they make
their money. Now of course not everyone is going to click on the paid
ads, only a small percentage of the searches they receive ever actually
make the search engine money. However, with millions of searches a day
it only takes a small percentage to really make a big monetary
difference.

So who are the warlords going to battle here? And who is in the lead?
The three major competitors are MSN, Google, and Yahoo, and Ask is
fighting its way back into the mix of things with some pretty sweet
search features.

As of right now Google is in the lead, they receive somewhere in the
ballpark of 80% of all search queries on the internet. Google is
estimated to gross around 3 billion dollars in 2006, all from just paid
advertisement. Now you may ask why is it that Google is so far ahead?
Well there are a few reasons. First, Google has the most advanced
algorithm, which is the mind boggling mathematical equation that ranks
and lists sites depending on the keyword. Trying to understand their
algorithm is extremely complicated, Google only hires absolute geniuses
to work for them. Second, is the brilliance of Google.com itself, which
is their homepage.

Take a look at Google's homepage, all you can do is type your keyword
in the search box and hit search. There's really nothing else going on
it's pretty clean cut and user friendly, with absolutely no
distractions from getting people to do what they want.

Now take a look at MSN, or Yahoo's homepage. It is just jam packed with
all sorts of stuff to do from playing games to reading articles about
the news. This stuff is great and all, however it does distract people
from typing into the search box and inevitably clicking on a paid ad
putting money in their pocket. I believe this is a major part in why
Google has such a gigantic lead in the volume of searches they receive
compared to the other top guns. .

So I firmly believe that in this case the giant will not be taken down.
Even though you see commercials for Yahoo and Ask, you know the ones
with the cheesy guy screaming Yahoooo and the monkey that Ask is
featuring. The bottom line is Google has the best algorithm right now
and their site doesn't distract people from searching, which will yield
many more search queries. Who knows though just as Google basically
came from no where and took over the market, there may be a new kid on
the block that will topple them. However as of now though they are the
reigning champions.

The Rise and Fall of Affiliate Programs
Affiliate programs were once a great source of online revenue,
a savvy webmaster with an eye for marketing could easily
parley a site into a money making machine with a little
luck and effort. However, the evolution and growth of the
Internet has hampered the growth of fortune making affiliate
programs. Constant search engine algorithm changes, along
with the search engine's clear distaste for sites participating
in affiliate programs; have made it a little more difficult
to earn a healthy affiliate revenue. An influx in the use
of software programs that terminate cookie tracking and
privacy programs that prevent webmasters from tracking referrers,
have also hindered the affiliate sales channel. While it
is still possible to make money through affiliate marketing,
other alternatives ought to be considered.

A Healthy Alternative or Supplement
Google's Adsense program allows approved websites to dynamically
serve Google's pay-per-click Adword results. This has become
a popular alternative and an effective revenue sharing program
for webmasters. Google's spider parses the adserving website
and serves ads that relate to the website's content. While
the Google's Adsense program still has some issues, they
are making efforts to improve it.

The website maintenance related to Adsense is very easy
and requires very little effort. Webmasters need only to
insert javascript into the webpage or website template.
The javascript calls the ad from Google and will ensure
that ads are served each time a visitor goes to the webpage.
If the visitor clicks one of the Adsense ads served to the
website, the website owner is credited for the referral.

The implementation, while simple, has its drawbacks. Google
dictates the format of the ads. Webmasters can select from
a handful of preformatted text boxes that lack creativity.
A recent improvement allows webmasters to modify the ad
boxes to resemble the website's color scheme. Still, a far
cry from some of the creative ads webmasters are accustom
to.

The example below reflects how the color scheme can be
modified to match the look of the website, but the ads physically
don't fit well into the overall website design.

sample modified to match sites color scheme:
http://www.hospital-software.com
(scroll to the bottom)

Google determines the content of the ads that are shown/
Sometimes the ads are poorly targeted, and of no interest
to the website visitors.

sample of poorly targeted ads:
http://www.real-estate-supply.com

Adwords can be a great addition to a website, and when
well matched to the content the revenue stream from Google
is consistent and effortless.

sample of effective Adsense program:
http://www.police-supplies.com
(scroll to the bottom)
http://www.small-business-software.net
(scroll to the bottom)

Not that the Google Adsense program is not without its
problems, as the reporting provided by Google is lacking.
Google has only recently implemented channels as a way to
track multiple sites that serve ads. The general reporting
simply shows the number of ads served, the percentage of
clicks received, and the revenue earned each day. Google
does not disclose the amount of the revenue they share,
what percentage of the revenue they earn and what someone
can expect to receive for each click. Webmasters with multiple
sites will have difficulty determining which websites are
producing the money in the Adsense program.

With affiliate programs many webmasters implement a new
browser launch with each click off the site, Adsense removes
the visitor from the website and there is not currently
an option to launch the visitor into another browser.

Early on Google implemented a filtering system that allowed
webmasters to prevent a specific domain's ads from being
served on the website. Ad blocking meant that webmasters
could prevent their competitors ads from being dynamically
served on their website.

Overall, adwords are great supplements to websites where
affiliate programs are either not performing or when affiliate
programs don't exist that target the sites content.

Give it a Try
Implementing and maintaining Google Adsense program on a content
site requires very little effort and can often bring a steady
stream of additional revenue for webmasters. Consider supplementing
content and see what happens.

Web Site Promotion For The Small Business v2

The goal of your small business is to make money, right? Are you making enough money? I know what you are thinking. What a stupid question. It IS a stupid question. You could always use more money, right? Here is a way to make money from your blog, which probably falls outside the realm of a site promotion tip, but it's my blog and I can post whatever I want.

Google has a service called AdSense (http://www.google.com/adsense/home/). It basically allows you to place ads on your web sites, blogs, and forums and if someone clicks on the ads, you win!!
