I used to host this blog on the subdomain of my previous employer. Just before I was laid off, I got the feeling that something was going to happen real soon with the company, so I stayed up all night that night figuring out a way to move all 100+ posts (from Community Server) I had on their server to a blog (BlogEngine.NET … only because I could directly port the data) on my own domain. Being in a rush, I just created the name blogs.johnasimpson.com off my main site (www.johnasimpson.com). Now, I find out that subdomains are bad. I checked my pagerank and here are the results:

– blogs.johnasimpson.com
– www.johnasimpson.com

Here are my options:

1. Move my blog to www.johnasimpson.com and 301-redirect all links.
2. Create a new domain name and start from scratch with PageRank and 301-redirect everything there.
3. {Buy an existing domain} with traffic on it and that has a suitable name.

** I believe I have an automated way to 301-redirect using a custom 404- error page and some ASP code.

Here is what I plan on doing:

1. I am going to look for a domain to purchase that already has traffic.
2. if I can’t find an existing domain, I am going to try and come up with a clever name for a new domain.
3. If I can’t come up with a new domain name, I am just going to move everything to www.johnasimpson.com and 301-redirect the pages.

I wish I would have thought of it.

Once you join EntreCard, there are several approaches you can take when using the system. You should decide what your true motivation for using this type of system is, and this will dictate your usage approach. There are two schools of thought; use the system to drive traffic to your web site and care only about yourself, or, use the system to gain exposure to new and interesting blogs/sites (and bloggers), and in addition, drive traffic to your site.

Regardless of how you plan on using the system, you should do these things to make the most of your usage of the system:

  1. Make a flashy card. The colors should stand out.
  2. When placing the EntreCard widget on your site, place it near the top of the page so it is easy to see for speed droppers.
  3. Click the “Campaign” button and select the section you are interested in.
  4. Visit the sites that look interesting to you. This is where you contribute to the system. When you are at each site, drop your card by clicking the “Drop” button on the EntreCard on the site. You will receive an “ec” for each drop. See ….. for more information on EntreCard rules.

Report any sites that you go to and they do not have an EntreCard displayed on their site so they can be removed from the system.
4. Promote your site. Two ways you can do this are to purchase comments from the Shop, or by clicking the “Advertise” link on the cards displayed under the Campaign button. One key is that you should use your credits to promote your web site as soon as you get them. Since they can’t be sold through the system yet, there is really no reason to hold on to them.

NOTE: You can only drop 300 cards per day. The EntreCard day cycles at midnight East Coast time.
